Lifetrace - application technical monitoring of the O2.sk portal

Project objectives

The aim of the project was to improve Liferay's monitoring of O2.sk customer portal, in order to predict possible issues ahead of time and to respond before the failure would occur.

Description of the solution

We used many years of our experience with performance tuning and stability of portal solutions on Liferay portal and Java based programming language systems. Thanks to this, we developed a monitoring tool Lifetrace, which allows us not only to indicate problems and find out their causes, but it can also warn us in advance. The solution includes, in addition to a clear view of monitored metrics and the ability to define custom graphs and queries, a number of specialized probes that are able to read detailed runtime and system performance data from the system various parts.

We first mapped with the client the current state of architecture and infrastructure, and contexts to define which probes will be used in the monitoring framework. At the same time we added some of our own connections to the project's content, which we developed specifically for this project. After the deployment of the final user "dashboards", we defined the threshold levels at which there will be a warning of a potential problem with the responsible representatives of the various systems and their metrics.

Result

Currently the tool Lifetrace monitors customer production online channel in detail, which is daily accessed by thousands of users. Lifetrace alerts specific responsible persons when some unusual phenomena occur in the runtime systems, so that the team can safely prevent failures. Should they occur nevertheless, the system provides enough information for subsequent analysis as to track and remove such errors.

Any failure of our online channel, i.e. the portal, offering our services, is critical for us. Not only our sales drop immediately, we lose the trust of our customers, which is the most important thing for us. The Lifetrace Application Monitoring Tool enables us to anticipate such outages and ideally prevent them from occurring altogether.
